- Summer Food Service Program
-
-

- We had, for a good while,
wanted to do more for the kids in the Mecca area. A lot of them do not have
access to nutritious meals due to various reasons, which we know from
feeding them at the ROCK on Wednesdays during the school year. After much
prayer, Pastor Donna and hubby Mike decided to feed the kids in response to
what we felt was God's call. In an effort to serve the kids more
effectively, we decided to try to make our church an "official"
state site. So, we
applied to the Indiana Dept. of Education's Summer Food Service
Program in order to become a participating site. As a result of that inquiry
(and a WHOLE lot of forms!), New Life Church
has been officially designated a S.F.S.P. site by the state of Indiana. This
means that we can feed kids up to age 18 during days and hours that we set.
We have decided to "be open" during the days that Montezuma Elementary is
tutoring students in the church, Tuesdays - Thursdays. We are serving
breakfast and lunch on those days. Breakfast hours are 8:30 - 9:00 a.m. and
lunch is 11:30 - noon.
-
As stated, all children/teens up to 18 are welcome to come and eat. There is
no cost at all for kids; the state helps sponsor the meals. Breakfast menus
might include pancakes, scrambled eggs, cereal or oatmeal; lunch might be
chicken and noodles, hot dogs, hamburgers, grilled cheese...we follow state
nutrition guidelines. Milk is served at every meal...we go through a lot of
it! Vegetables, fruits and juices and other items round out our menus. Here
is a typical menu...we used this particular menu June 19 - 21:
- Tuesday:
- Breakfast: Scrambled eggs,
toast, butter, jelly, orange juice (OJ), milk
- Lunch: Hot dogs, mac &
cheese, carrots, milk
-
- Wednesday:
- Breakfast: Pancakes,
butter, syrup, OJ, milk
- Lunch: Chicken and noodles,
carrots, milk
-
- Thursday:
- Breakfast: Oatmeal, toast,
butter, jelly, OJ, milk
- Lunch: Hamburgers, chips,
carrots, OJ (if desired), milk
- Peanut butter is also
available all the time either as a vegetable dip or as a PB&J sandwich.
- We will run the program
through June 27 and see how it goes. There's a possibility that we will
continue the program into July, if the need is there. We are grateful that
we can help provide kids with nutritious meals at no cost to them; God is
definitely working in Mecca!
